This week I introduce my third book release Reflect On These Things – Practical Meditations Gleaned from Australia’s Amazing Birds. Unlike my previous two books, this is distinctively a Christian teaching book.

As you can observe from the cover of my new book the Australian Pelican is resting alone on a quiet section of the river. Birds take time-out to rest between their energetic feeding times. Wader water birds or shorebirds tend to rest during high tides when they find the water too deep to forage in the shallows and wet sand for small fish and crabs. My book emphasises the importance of taking time-out for time to relate meaningfully and intimately alone with God, preferably at the very beginning of the day, early in the morning.
The Royal Spoonbill is good example of a wader that rests at high tide to renew its energy for the next low tide. Most species of waterbirds rest by standing on one leg, to rest the other leg since birds do not normally sit as we do but are always standing. They change legs periodically. When they sleep they turn their head and tuck their bill under their back feathers to breathe warm air which helps them to relax and sleep. Sometimes one bird in the small flock will take turns keeping watch for possible danger.

Birds from the very playful Parrot family often like to play and mate during their rest time, which helps to destress them. The Little Corella is one of the best examples as they are found in large flocks which stay together. You often see them rolling around on the grass playing and kissing and making themselves vulnerable to their mate. Click photo to enlarge it.

This large flock of Zebra Finch are resting out in the desert of Australia’s Northern Territory in the shade from the hot sun.
Likewise we all need time-out alone in a quiet place with no technology or modern media distractions, just us, a copy of my new book, a Bible or Bible app on your phone and God your Heavenly Father who is dearly awaiting your attention because he made you for love and relationship firstly with himself via his Holy Spirit and secondly with every other person in your life. Thanks Deborah, I have already had some very positive comments and sold my first book soon after publishing it. I am very happy I finally got it out and pray it will bless many like my previous books. However, this is my Christian version of the other two books, the book I have been always wanting to write.

Thanks so much Kathy for your encouraging comment. I am hoping it will be a blessing to many young adults we connect with. It is a beautiful book and has taken 3 years to refine.

Wow, and many congratulations @aussiebirder..
This is the first time I came across books on birds and I found them really very interesting. It makes me happy to see you are a true nature lover, because nature always gives us peace and supports mental wellness. Loved this share! 🌿

Thanks Deepika for your kind comment. All of my books are about birds and how they can help us live a better life. Birds are so much like us and so much more intelligent than was first thought 200 years ago. Recent neurological research has shown that some species are actually more intelligent than apes and young children.

Yes, you’re right—bird sounds and nature truly give us mental peace. Whenever I’m in Lucknow, my hometown in Uttar Pradesh, my home is nearby Kukrail Forest. It has such a unique vibe, and in the early mornings I hear so many different bird calls. My mom is a bird lover too, and even my daughter enjoys it when birds visit our terrace lawn—it feels like they’re having little conversations with us. They’re so friendly with my mom; it’s beautiful to see and listen birds. “

So true Deepika the bird song is so good for our wellbeing and sooths us, lowers our blood pressure and helps us relax. Yes the morning chorus as us birders call it is the best time to be out birding for this is when the birds all awake and start calling to each other and declaring their territories and busily feed after their long sleep. The evening chorus before sunset is another time they all excitedly get a last feed in before finding their roost tree. So glad your mum is encouraging birding for you, we enjoy taking our grandchildren out birding when they visit.
