Taking a walk in our local Nature Reserve my wife and i noted how quiet the Winter forest was in the non breeding season when many of the birds are feeding much quieter than in the Summer breeding months. We wondered how much quieter it might become if the H5 Bird Flue, which has now entered Australia’s south west, spreads across our vast continent. On our walk we saw a male and female Golden Whistler flitting about the canopy of the casuarina trees.

They were more difficult to detect as in Winter they seldom call as they rest from their territorial duty during the breeding season. The female is very plain looking which is an advantage when protecting the nest from prying predators. We noted this Eastern Crimson Rosella looking quite lovely feeding on casuarina seed pods in the sunlight, which is a common sight during the Winter months. Click on images to enlarge them.

There were other water birds but I only included this Little Pied Cormorant and Eastern Great Egret. The black and pied little cormorant species are mostly river and lake feeding birds.

On the track as we passed the nesting tree of the Powerful Owl we met a couple of young lady birders and discussed how we use to see the male Powerful Owl guarding the nest from a distance in the Mangroves directly opposite and in view of the nesting hole, but we did not see it this day. However, as we walked further on they met a lone male tourist birder from England toting a 100-800 mm L series lens ! who had detected the owl resting on an exposed branch beside the track. The girls called out to us and we came and discovered their amazing find, since neither of the three had seen the Powerful Owl here before, and was a first also for them.

It had removed the head in one bite as the most nutritious choice part of the small possum and was hanging the body keeping it to feed the female and nestlings later. It may have moved closer so as to feed the female as it approached dark.

The Golden Whistler is featured in my very beautiful and unique book “What Birds Teach Us” which is available HERE ONLINE at my secure checkout or click on the image below to find out more.

This book is the ideal gift for all ages who love birds but is written especially targeting children from ages 7 to 12 years. It introduces them to Australia’s beautiful and clever birds and teaches facts about them, having the additional feature of teaching an important life skill from the life of each bird. This book will help equip you grandchild or child for life and has been carefully crafted with the assistance of educators and counselors,

“The Lord is watching everywhere, keeping his eye on both the evil and the good.” – Proverbs 15:3
It was an interesting reflection that I received after seeing the Powerful Owl watching us quietly as we talked and passed by. All the time we were being watched yet we knew not. This is how each of our lives are before the living God our creator, who knows us intimately and loves us despite our selfish sinful rebellious natures which proudly refuse to submit to his rightful loving authority. God our Heavenly Father even sent his only Son the Lord Jesus to clear our name and grant us the golden opportunity to be made right with Him simply by turning away from our selfish life, receiving Jesus by believing in him for salvation and receiving his life giving Holy Spirit into one’s life to empower and lead in a personal righteous loving fruitful life in a living loving relationship with God. It is a free gift you can not earn it but is a gift of God’s grace received simply by faith to all who will.
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in[a] Christ Jesus our Lord.” – Romans 6:23
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.” – John 3:16-21

Hello Ash,
We are delighted to see you and your wife could make time to take a walk together in this beautiful nature reserve. The photos of the Golden Whistler male and female are lovely, and how blessed you were to see the Powerful Owl in such beautiful light. Sharing this experience with other birders must have made it even more special. Thank you for sharing, and you’re both in our daily thoughts and prayers. Hope to reply to your message soon, and a card will also be on its way to you.

Thanks Takami, We are delighted you enjoyed the treasures from our walk. The Golden Whistler male is always stunning in the sunlight, though this time of year he does little whistling, but will be quite vocal in the Spring breeding season. Always in our thoughts and prayers also dear friend.

Lovely photos Ashley, and great to see the powerful owl. All quiet here too down in Tassie, very cold and dreary grey days, not much to see here either.

Thanks Sue, yes its raining here now and cold for the next week also. Stay warm and dry. Praying the H5 bird flue stays away from Tassie.

Yes, fingers crossed the bird flu doesn’t arrive here on our little island.

Hello Ashley,
It has been very quiet here as well. All the usual suspects seem to be else where.
Great to see the Powerful Owl and prey out in the open, and the rich sunlight helps show the best details.
Winter is certainly upon us and the desire to go out in the cold and overcast is quickly overcome by a warm cuppa and a chat.

Thanks David, it was a surprise to see the Owl so up close and with prey hanging which makes me think his lady is still in the nest possibly with new borns, as he is so much closer now to the nest. Sorry the weather is so typically Melbournish for this time of year and inclement for birding. We are thankful for sunny very cool dry days for a change, though this will change in the coming days, even tonight. Since there is not a lot to see at present we have been somewhat discouraged from checking out our usual spots. Enjoy keeping warm, it has been very cold in the mornings here and I don’t think age improves the experience.
