This post explores more birds from our Mt Annan bird dates. It is interesting how varied particular bird species nesting seasons are, especially for the Rainbow Lorikeet which may nest in Spring Summer or Winter Spring depending on the present food supply and prevailing weather conditions. We found several nests in old eucalypt trees near areas of flowering Grevillea ‘Superb’ bushes, which supply nectar as they flick it with their tongue into their mouths. If you want to attract these birds and other honeyeaters to your backyard plant Grevillea species (especially Moonlight) as they are some of the largest nectar producers. In my best selling book What Birds Teach Us, the Rainbow Lorikeet is showcased as a bird which pairs for life and models faithfulness in relationships and commitment to its partner, a quality that we need to embrace and teach and model to our children. Healthy relationships are built on practical love, trust, honesty and integrity of character. This book is popular because of its unique quality and beautiful presentation, in that while it highlights characteristics of popular Australian birds, each bird teaches a life lesson to encourage wise decisions for a healthy happy life. It targets the Primary aged child and is easy reading and non confronting. You nearly always find this bird in pairs noisily communicating to each other as they fly or feed. The Rainbow Lorikeet are most feared of other birds as they are savagely aggressive and pack a ferocious bite, and many will not contest them except maybe Kookaburra when they fight over the occupation of arboreal termite nests. This recently built one has the hole made by a Kookaburra or other Kingfisher species charging at it. They will be nesting in it the coming Spring or Summer. Note the facial expressions below at the stand off.

Australia is known as a country that has an early Spring flowering season, especially of Wattle, which is our national floral emblem and its colours, green and gold, form the national colours of our Olympic and other sports teams. This is Sunshine Wattle one of the many subspecies which grow throughout our country which flowers currently at Mt Annan. Many people acquire allergy to its pollen and each Spring when it is windy may suffer from acute Seasonal Rhinitis with sneezing, runny nose, sinus headache and sore eyes.
The Australian King Parrot male is another beautiful bird of the Parrot species that inhabits Mt Annan Botanic Gardens. This male looks beautiful in the winter sunshine as does this Grey Butcherbird.

The Straw-necked Ibis was grazing nearby and saw a couple of immature Australian Magpie also grazing nearby and wanted to move them on. Notice the beautiful iridescence of its wing plumage in the winter sunlight.

Enjoy your week, and bird safely depending on your weather conditions. Many parts of the world have shared how like us here in Sydney, are experiencing unusual and unseasonable weather conditions. Either too hot, too wet too cold too dry etc. Welcome if this is your first visit to my blog. Check out my website and discover more healthy birding tips on life we can learn from our intelligent birds. Also check out my books which have currently had a big boost in sales in recent weeks. The primary aim of my books is to leave a legacy of love and wisdom to the younger generation that follows. The current Post Christian secular humanistic society in which we live, is openly challenging the proven and tested life values and ethics of our past stable respectful Christian world view. This is resulting ultimately in increased social unrest, loneliness, bullying, rage, violence, depression and suicide. My desire is to assist those who want to encourage their children in the healthy Godly fundamental absolute values that have blessed and prospered our society safely through the past century. While my books do not mention God or any particular faith platform, they do possess his good wholesome wise values. Our choices lead us in our life direction regardless of the challenges we may experience along the way, which are sent by God to make us grow in character, wisdom, understanding and love. These books help us best navigate a safe course through these various life challenges.
“Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you.” – Proverbs 4:6 (NIV)
“ I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.” – Romans 8:18
“Fear [Loving respectful obedience] of the Lord is the foundation of true wisdom.” – Psalm 111:10 (NLT)

Hello Ash,
One cannot help but smile when seeing the Rainbow Lorikeets. Their fierce loyalty to each other and how they mate for life is very moving. We appreciate how you always make a point to provide various perspectives and dynamics amongst different birds (and their environments). We pray their winter nesting season will result in healthy chicks.
Thanks for your messages, currently writing a long reply☺️ May you and your wife have a blessed second half to the week.

Thanks Takami, and thank you for your kind comments in appreciation of the accompanying information to my posts. It has been a very wet winter so far with more rain now come for another unseasonable wet week jat arrived. This may be the wettest winter on record, so it will be challenging for the nesting birds many of which prefer nesting in the dryer winter months. It will test their choice of nesting holes and nest building quality and skills. The wonderful characteristic of our Aussie birds is their resilience, which is an encouragement to us all. Enjoy your week my friends. My wife and I send out deep gratitude for the lovely card that arrived yesterday 🙂
