We are always delighted to hear to the classic call of a flock of Little Corella passing over our house each day as they fly out to new feeding grounds. Corella are a seed eating Parrot species endemic to Australia. However, on this day earlier in the week we heard the calls of many Corella not passing over, but remaining and flying around our street. We, as did other residents, came out of our houses to watch them grace the many introduced pine trees in the front yards as the Corella used their powerful thick beaks to break open the tough exterior shell of the seed fruit of these trees.

Little Corella have a white crest on their head which they raise when excited or threatened. Most of the time it is not visible. They are a very playful bird and exist well in the arid dry hot inland areas of our continent in some of the largest flocks of any bird in our country. They live, mate and breed within the flock.

We thought seeing the Little Corella Tree was a great prelude to a decorated Christmas Tree, where the evergreen pine was a sign of hope for the coming Spring, throughout the cold dark the snow laden northern hemisphere countries during the long Winter months. These birds, similar to others in the Parrot family pair for life and spend their time exploring and playing with their partners when not nesting. These playful birds use play, as many bird species do, to de stress from their often stressful lives of avoiding predation and keeping with the flock.

It is not uncommon to see them mating and playing with each other in order to discover their partner for life. The act of making themselves very vulnerable to the partner is a submissive trust action which other intelligent bird species, especially the Australian Magpie, is known for. They are very affectionate to each other.

They love to swing and show off playfully to their partner to be to make a good impression. This is one good example which I have showed in a previous post.

Play and sport is not just for children. Recreational activities are just as important to us as they are to the birds, and other animals. One thing we do learn from the Little Corella flock, is that we do Better Together. Safety and security in community assists them finding food and water, avoiding predation and feeling the affection , warmth of a more stress free life. God in his loving wisdom and intelligent design has created us each into families and communities to learn and reflect his Love nature and in doing this, glorify him. Life in its fullness is Relationships that Reflect God’s Love.

However we can only love unconditionally and faithfully, in a similar way to the Corella, if we have turned away from living our selfish self centred lives, believe in Jesus God’s Son, who loves us and died for us so we may receive the forgiveness he offers and freely grants us so we may receive his Holy Spirit in order to live as his love reflecting children.

“God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.  This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus.  There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.  We love because he first loved us. Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen.  And he has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister.” – 1 John 4:16-21 (NIV)

Our largest snare to our sinful selfish nature is the fear of people and what they can do to us, but more so what we perceive they can, which may or may not be realistic. This fear alienates us rather than brings us together, making it a very destructive and negative life force which has been the ongoing result of the mistrust that sin and selfishness brought into our world. As my saying goes Fear Freezes us where Faith moves us Forward. We fear what people think of us, we fear that we will loose out, we fear not having enough, we fear impending danger or death etc etc etc. The human heart is full of fears, often irrational fears sometimes so life limiting that they require CBT to correct. Many hide their fears and try to brave life despite their fears, knowing full well they feel alone and uncertain about life and its outcome. God says over 300 times in the Bible: “Do not be afraid ” and often followed by “for I am with you : says the Lord.” Courage for life and death comes from the same God who designed and made each of us unique.

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” – Joshua 1:9
