Last weekend my wife’s family and us had a annual birthday celebration away. We were in the beautiful Blue Mountains. While we were there we watched daily as a family of Satin Bowerbird fed from a fig tree in a next door property. There was much toing and froing by Satin Bowerbirds, Pied Currawong and the occasional Australian Magpie. Most Australian rainforest birds are essentially fruit eaters and rely in the production of the various hundreds of native rainforest fruit species fruiting at different times throughout the year providing for their needs by God in his constant daily loving provision. We likewise share the same blessing though we may not give God the credit or respect he is due.

Let’s take a look at the action. The male has a very deep blue/black plumage and the female more colorful and both have a mauve/blue eye. The male is beautiful to the female because she can see ultraviolet (UV) light which makes the male even more spectacular and attractive for breeding especially when they stand in their beautifully decorated bowers. The males beautiful coloration is only truly appreciated in bright sunlight. This is why he positions his bower so the sun shines through only on him standing in front of the bower so he looks even more attractive to the visiting females. The male is is extremely shy and elusive to human viewing.

The Pied Currawong is another bird that is elusive and shy of being viewed by humans, mainly because it is a bird of stealth and opportunistic tendencies, always looking for sneaky ways to get a free feed or take advantage of some poor unsuspecting bird or human by stealing from them. The are Corvid like and very intelligent having a beautiful and multi varied song which is frequently heard as they communicate with one another throughout the day, similar to Magpies.

Australian Magpies are not usually fruit eaters but feed from the ground on insects and larvae but will eat small figs if they find them lying on the ground, as they do not feed from perching in trees as most other passerine birds do. Here one magpie feeds while the other sings.

Have a wonderful week and enjoyable weekend celebration of our Lord Jesus’ death and resurrection on our behalf, celebrating the wonderful mercy and grace of God extended as a free gift to us who were dead in our sinfulness and separated from loving relationship with our Father God.
